Stuck in the greenhouses today.

[Feeling a bit guilty over his sister's lack of parents for the parents' weekend, her brother is looking to spend some quality time. He's not even going to bicker today. Much.]

[not like she's expecting a huge welcome party. Emmeline wrinkles her nose, quite rabbit-like, at the serious thought of lettuce biscuits.]

Don' try it, what a terrible idea...

[and she puts her bag of biscuits down on a table by the greenhouse door so she can have both hands free for tea.] What'll I bring back for ya?

Not for the rabbits.

Aren't you coming yet?

[Tea in the office, sis.]

Not for anybody!

Ah....

[well. she picks the biscuits back up and takes them into the office, puts them on top of his paperwork and skips around the desk to sit in his chair, smiling cheekily.]

Fine, then you pour it!

[He frowns, all dirt-covered gloves and arms full of fluffy bunny; he promptly hands the pudgy fellow down to Marijke and goes to bring the tea, taking off the gloves and his gardening overcoat.

And then he comes back with tea; blackcurrant, a little stronger than he'd like it but he knows zus likes sweeter things. Last he comes back with a plate of flat stroopwafel, and he's even managed to make some extra syrup for them. Dragging over a chair, he sits a bit heavily, staring into space a moment before reaching over and giving the rabbit a pat.]

How are the biscuits?

[her face lights up and she reaches out to take the offered rabbit, beginning to coo.] Oo's my ickle baby? Hei-ja, oo's an ickle baby boy?

[it's sufficiently distracting that she only looks up after her brother asks a question.]

Oh — 'course they're good, aren't they? I only bring the best!

Hmm.

[He's actually pouring the tea now look sis your bro is actually pouring his own tea, and then he takes a bit of stroop and offers it to the bunny, who is currently lazing about in Marijke's arms.]

You . . . you having an okay week?

Well, it ain't a bad sort.

[she watches the rabbit sniff forward and take a bite of the waffle, before cheerfully reaching out and taking one for herself.]

Nearly burnt a hole through one o' the school cauldrons, but Toño liked his 'piphany gift, so I think that balances it mostly.

Y'know, I'm real good at potions. [He is; he's going to look at her expectantly until she mention Tonio, then he frowns some more and takes some tea for himself, swallowing more than just the drink.]

What'd you give him?

Think I just had an off day, ain't done that since second year!

[idly she rubs at the top of the rabbit's head, smiling at it a little more fondly than she may have if she hadn't been thinking of Antonio.]

Gave 'im that scarf I made, 'cos you know he hates the weather here an' I thought it might help some.

Did ya get somethin' besides what I gave ya?

[Argh sis how could you give him a scarf, he probably doesn't appreciate it at all. Still, he holds any comments or temper that he wants to reply with back, flicking his gaze to his own scarf hanging near the door but it's quick, she may not even notice it. ]

Got some new things for the classrooms along with some new plants from the school. A book from Honda, and the same one from Vaartje.

[He rolls his eyes a little. ] It's new, so they both thought . . .

[A few vague gestures. He swallows some more tea.]

Moeder didn't send a card, even . . .

[long pause]

Sorry they never come for parent's weekend.

[she's ready to scold him for being unappreciative of the thoughtful presents, but her brother doesn't look ungrateful, so she leaves it off. instead, she cringes a little at the mention of their ever-absent mother, slopping tea down her chin.]

Ah — ow —

[delicately she mops herself up with her sleeve, looking at the desk. while she'd stopped expecting holiday cards from their mother after her third year at Hogwarts, it still isn't something she likes to consider, and sometimes she still finds herself wondering if she could persuade Dumbledore to install a Muggle mailbox system so her mother could send them post without having to deal with owls; the owls, of course, weren't the problem their mother had, but she is still 15 and hopeful.]

... It's okay. It wasn't real expected, huh? Last-minute kinda visitation thing, surprised anyone's folks had the time at all!

[Oh zus, you know she hasn't come since his first year, right? Vader hasn't really made the effort much either, but for some reason he wonders sometimes if he could have done something differently to get their mother to come back after his first year.

Slight guilt, maybe.]

Oh, uh . . . well, maybe.

[Eating now in favor of speaking.]

Hey, don't look so disappointed, ain't like we hadn't just got back from holiday wit' him. I don't mind!

[this is her deftly ignoring anything uncomfortable.]

[He's taking the bunny now, by the way, feeding it a bit more stroop. No wonder he's bigger than the others.]

Who's disappointed. Only want them to come for you, so. . .

[omg the rabbit will die of bunny diabetes and then where will you be.]

I dunno, you're the one makin' all this noise about it, ain't you?

[Staring at the bunny; if he doesn't look at zus maybe she won't take it as seriously.]

Don't want you unhappy though.

[she doesn't say anything for a moment, dragging out the quiet. finally:]

Who says I ain't happy now?

[Well sure, you're always going to be happy where you're put because that's who you are, zus. But he knows it must worry you sometimes, like it worries him.]

Not saying that at all.

[He holds the bunny back out.]

Oughtn't worry 'bout me...

[bunny! she takes him back, with considerably less gleeful enthusiasm than she had previously.]

What's this really 'bout, then, huh?

[Well, he knew zus was smart. He doesn't really want to fess up . . .]

Just wantin' to see you. And I didn't-- well I didn't want you feeli--[hnngh why is it so hard to say how much he cares about her]

Feeling bad about the parents. [It's quiet, and Thijs suddenly takes a serious interest in a stack of papers on the edge of his desk, snatching them and leafing through slowly, but he's hardly reading the words.]

[oh, why is her brother so damn weird with affection, sulking and snapping instead of talking sense out straight. Emmeline leans forward, the bunny in her lap, and puts her hands over her brother's.]

It's alright. I'm alright with you. If Mama's not gonna see us anymore, an' Papa's too busy, I still have my dumb brother, yeah?

[He lowers his hands as her own set lightly on top of them, lowering the papers as well and looking at Marijke over them. He only manages for a few moments (breaks his heart to hear her talk like that) before frowning deeply and letting his gaze drift off to the side.]

I don't know who you're talking about.

[her smile tilts with a tease; there's that fussy Broer. better to rib him a little than sit and let him work himself into an upset, not if she can help it.]

Don't you? Can't see how you'd miss him, he's fair huge, an' always hangin' around the greenhouses like he's got more roots than a willow tree.

[You get the smallest of smiles for that, though it's more like a smirk. ]

Oh, you mean the sharp fellow in the greenhouses who keeps the plants from mauling the students? He's half-way decent, I thought.

No, definitely not him. I mean the one who planted the student-mauling flora. That guy's my dumb brother.

Then he must be very old; those plants have been there for a good long while!
